Editors, models, and It Girls—the kind who normally float above the Fashion Week fray—all scrambled for Instagrams with Uzo Aduba, the newly-minted Emmy winner from Orange Is the New Black.We caught the actress just before the (beautiful) show began, and talked about drama teachers, Halloween faux-pas, and her magical link to Lindsey Wixson:You’re a breakout style star this season—and you’ve also become a bonafide celebrity. Is it fun getting recognized more as Uzo and less as “Crazy Eyes”?People are now starting to understand what I look like, versus what Suzanne looks like. And that’s a really nice change, I guess, or adjustment. Before, people used to expect to see the girl in the jumpsuit with the knots in her hair—they’d think I’d just come on the subway like that! But now it’s like, ‘Oh, wait, that’s a character she plays.’How are the reactions to the ‘Uzo you’ different?It’s funny. I get catcalled a little! I get a lot of, ‘Whaaat?!’ and online, I see a lot of, ‘You’ll never guess who this is,’ and I’m like, ‘It’s me, guys! It’s all me!’That must be fun.Oh, I think it’s great. It means I’ve played the character well. And not just me. The hair, the makeup—that transformation is from a collection of people on-set. And when people are surprised at what I look like in person, that’s a great compliment to all of us.Does your cast have a “no orange” clause on the red carpet?I’ll definitely wear orange on the red carpet! I think it’s really beautiful that these women are celebrated in part for being different.
